About the Dorothy Waide Centre for Early Learning?

We are licensed as a 70-place, extended-hours early childhood centre, providing preschool and long day care on a daily or weekly rate. We also provide limited out of school hours and occasional care. Sessional or half day care is not available.

We follow a family grouping philosophy, offering quality care and education in a small grouped environment. Our child to staff ratio is high, recognising that more staff on the floor provides a better environment for the children in care.

We have three early childhood qualified teachers, four diploma trained staff (1 enrolled and completing their Early Childhood degree) and 1 staff member completing their diploma through distance ed, and 5 Cert 3 qualified staff.

There is a strong emphasis on planning for the individual and cooperation with parents to achieve this goal. Our program follows the National Early Years Learning Framework.

Our environments are important to our philosophy.  Two large playgrounds (we are talking huge here), large indoor play spaces, a focus on natural play spaces, challenging and aesthetically beautiful spaces.  Check out the environment here.

The aim of the staff, committee and parents is to provide opportunities for children to develop basic concepts, language, and social skills, inter and intra personal skills, physical and cognitive skills and understanding of the world around them. All in a fun and loving environment.

Who was Dorothy Waide?

The Centre is named after Mrs Dorothy Waide, former infants teacher at St Patrick's Primary School and Councillor on Griffith City Council. Mrs Waide was a keen supporter of additional services for families within our community and fought for many years for the provision of child care facilities for young families.

Mrs Waide was one of the instrumental people who lead the fight to establish this Centre, the first long day care facility in Griffith. The renaming of the Centre in honour of Mrs Waide, in 1995, recognised the important role this wonderful woman played in our communities development.

Sadly, Mrs Waide passed away in 2001.
